Using HDRMT to Open Up Blocked Highlights!

2-Minute Tutorials

Jan 31, 2023

This video covers using HDRMultiScale Transform (MDRMT) to Open up blocked highlights in your image.

Most of what we image is extraordinarily faint - but sometimes you will have very bright portions where you lose detail in the highlights.

This is common with the bright core of galaxies, brighter portions of some nebulae, and some areas of bright emission Ha regions.

HDRMT can redistribute the code values at the top of your tonescale using a Multiscale method.

The key parameter here is the Scale level input that must be iteratively arrived at. The result is often more detailed in the highlights and a lowered overall contrast. A CurvesTransformation Tool typically follows this operation to readjust the overall contrast and tone scale.

WARNING: This tutorial is a little longer than others - the "2-Minute" name should be interpreted as "Shortish videos" rather than literally - especially in this case! :-)
